Create Lists is a powerful tool in Millennium which allows you to compile custom lists for many different purposes. Getting the most from the tool requires some understanding of how the data is stored in the database. We'll look at the different types of records, what data is stored where, and how to use Create Lists to pull out exactly the information you need.

This program focuses on the basics of creating lists in Millennium.  It includes an overview of some of the different ways lists can be useful, how to set up search criteria, how to sort your lists and basic ways to export the data.

"Request Circles" is a feature of the III software which allows libraries to --determine which locations can have materials paged from them and delivered to them, --decide which items and collections should be included in the paging/ delivery service, and --decide which categories of patrons can participate in this delivery service.  This presentation describes this feature and one library's experience with it.

In order to divide work among departments, we at PCC have formed a team to manage our Innovative system.  The team consists of representatives from each area of the library.  This presentation will show how work is divided up, how progress is tracked, and what tools are used to share information with library staff.  We will conclude with some time for attendees to share management tips with each other.

This presentation will demonstrate how Lewis & Clark College has built several applications that utilize data extracted from their III system: new books notification system, new books web page, a system for easily exporting bibliographic data from the OPAC to RefWorks, and a combination print/electronic serials statistics system.  We will discuss data extraction from III using Create Lists as well as the somewhat elusive xrecord= command link, which delivers XML versions of III records.  We will also review the PHP scripts and SQL databases that run these applications.

At the 2004 IUG meeting Michele Morgan of NOBLE gave a presentation on the Access report maker she developed called Reportster.  It is available at the IUG Clearinghouse for other libraries to use. Due to variations in library setups it may need to be tweaked before you can use it at your library. This program will point out some locations to check if it doesn't work "out of the box" at your site. Focus is on this rather than the actual uses of Reportster, although that will be touched on as well.

The basics of data exchange will be presented using examples with authority, bibliographic, and patron records.  The following will be covered:  how to use ‘Get FTS’ and ‘Get PC’, load records, and output records to another system.  There should be time for discussion and questions about features of the module at the end.

Millennium Holds Management features couldn't be easier to use.  Or could they?  This program will be a discussion of Millennium’s new Holds Features as well as the basics of placing, receiving and manipulating holds in Millennium.  There will be tips on how to utilize all the features of Millennium Holds Management to make local holds, multi-agency holds, and Summit holds simple.  There will be a discussion of basic, effective daily and weekly hold workflow and how some simple maintenance and information can keep items on hold moving in the right direction.

This session will describe the implementation process for Electronic Claiming of Serials Issues via Email (III product 506A). The presenters will discuss the capabilities of the product, benefits and challenges associated with implementation, and our on-going experience working with the product. Western Oregon University successfully implemented electronic claiming in 2004.

With the passage of the Patriot Act and its recent renewal, libraries have become more involved in assessing the confidentiality of patron information within the library, particularly on ILS systems.  As part of this process, we are working on assessing what information should be maintained and for how long on III.  This program will provide a brief overview of the Patriot Act and how it applies to libraries and will give some tips on protecting confidential patron information on the system.

 

Using MARC Holdings in Millennium Serials:  Nuts and Bolts                                                                                                                                     Franz Hall #223

OCLC is implementing MARC 21 Format for Holdings Data (MFHD), and many libraries are following suit in their local environments.  This workshop is aimed at those considering converting current serial holdings data from free text into the MARC Holdings format, or those simply wishing to establish a foothold with MARC.  Attendees will learn the basics of the MFHD within Millennium Serials.  Issues regarding how to undertake an implementation, what challenges are involved in converting your local holdings to the standard, and when and how to take advantage of OCLC’s LDR Updating Service will also be discussed. 

 

Link Resolvers: an Overview for Reference Librarians                                                                                                                                                                                           Franz Hall #231

Link resolvers work correctly over 90% of the time.  However, when unexpected results occur, the patron turns to the reference librarian for an explanation.  This session gives a brief overview of how link resolvers work and the data problems and issues that can occur.  The focus will be on WebBridge but the principles apply to all link resolvers.
