import, and integrate images into the bibliographic database.
-
- BEFORE Create Lists; or, Finding Elusive Information in Your Library
Database - Berniece Owen, Portland Community College (Franz Hall
Room 223)
- Create lists is a wonderful tool for all levels of library staff in all
types of libraries. However, non-catalogers and non-programmers frequently
have a lot of difficultly learning to use the function productively. They
may lack a basic understanding of fixed and variable fields, to say nothing
of MARC. They may also struggle to understand that the information they seek
could be in multiple databases. That is, the full trail of a circulation transaction
will affect the item record database and the patron database. This is a basic
tutorial on tracking elusive database information and statistics that may
not come in pre-bundled reports. I will share our learning experience with
Create Lists, and I will offer hints and strategies to help you map your own
successful reports.
- WebOPAC with a WebBridge Focus - Ted Fons, Innovative Interfaces (Franz
Hall Room 206)
- A review of the latest Web OPAC features with a focus on the possibilities
of contextual web linking with Innovative's WebBridge software.
2:15 - 3:15pm
- MilCat w/Automatic Authorities Processing - Claudia Conrad, Innovative
Interfaces (Franz Hall Room 206)
- An overview of the Millennium Cataloging module with an emphasis on the
new editor and automatic authorities processing.
- URL/Link Checking - Terry Reese, Oregon State University (Franz Hall
Room 223)
- As electronic resources begin to make up more and more of a library's current
research collection, issues such as url maintenance and the mechanisms for
doing such maintenance become more and more important. In the past, URL maintenance
primarily was done either using a myriad of freeware applications or your
system's built-in URL checking software. Like most vendors, III has traditionally
included a URL checking application, but its overall usefulness has always
been suspect. However, with III's 2002 Phase 2 release, the URL checker has
been both improved and integrated into the MilCat application. This presentation
will be a discussion and simple demonstration of this software and its functionality.
- New Release Information - Betsy Graham, Innovative Interfaces (Franz
Hall Room 214)
- An overview of upcoming enhancements.
3:30 - 4:30pm
- Millennium Create Lists/Millennium Statistics - Claudia Conrad &
Ted Fons, Innovative Interfaces (Franz Hall Room 206)

upcoming Millennium Statistics program.
- The Networked Union Catalog: Requesting Items Using INNOPAC and INN-Reach
- Linda Frederiksen & Nicole Campbell, Washington State University - Vancouver
(Franz Hall Room 214)
- Using Cascade and Griffin Request Item as an example, this presentation
will focus on patron requests, examining both the patron side and the staff
side, as well as how INNOPAC and INN-Reach perform item selection, typical
problems encountered during the request process, and how statistics are produced
by each system.

- Using III to do authority work in-house - Shirley Lincicum, Western Oregon
University (Franz Hall Room 026)
- This session will provide an introduction to using III system tools to
peform routine authority work in-house. It will include a brief overview of
the primary goals of authority control and discuss how III tools work in support
of these goals. Approaches and specific practices used at Western Oregon University
that allow routine authority work to be successfully integrated into the regular
workflow will also be discussed. This presentation will be of greatest interest
to those who are unfamiliar with III authorities tools and are seeking to
develop procedures for performing basic authority work and related database
maintenance without regular assistance from outside vendors.
- WebOPAC with a WebBridge Focus - Ted Fons, Innovative Interfaces (Franz
Hall Room 015)
- A review of the latest Web OPAC features with a focus on the possibilities
of contextual web linking with Innovative's WebBridge software.
- BEFORE Create Lists; or, Finding Elusive Information in Your Library
Database - Berniece Owen, Portland Community College (Franz Hall Room
206)

answers, and tips to share with your colleagues.
- Using Expect to Automate Repetitive Tasks in the Innopac - Mark Dahl,
Lewis and Clark College (Franz Hall Room 223)
- This presentation will demonstrate how to use the Expect programming language
to automate repetitive tasks in an Innopac. Expect is an easy-to-use language
that can simulate human interaction with menu driven, telnet based interfaces.
I will demonstrate how to use Expect to extract bibliographic, order, or patron
data using the III create lists feature. I will also show how it may be used
to automatically create statistical reports, initialize and verify backup
tapes, and move order data into item records.
11:00 - 12:00 pm
- Serials Forum - Susanna Flodin, Oregon Institute of Technology (Franz
Hall Room 015)
- An open discussion for users of the serials module. Bring your questions,
answers, and tips to share with your colleagues.

Interfaces (Franz Hall Room 026)
- An overview of the Millennium Cataloging module with an emphasis on the
new editor and automatic authorities processing.
- Advanced Create Lists - Robbie Giles, Washington State University (Franz
Hall Room 206)
- This session will focus on complex searches in the create lists function.
You will also learn to e-mail functions to create reports.
- Electronic Resource Management - Diane Grover, University of Washington
& Ted Fons, Innovative Interfaces (Franz Hall Room 214)
- Fully integrated with the Millennium system or available as a stand-alone,
Electronic Resource Management enables libraries to keep track of their e-journal
licensing and purchasing details using a single interface, streamlining workflows,
and eliminating the need to maintain separate databases. The module defines
relationships between aggregators or publishers and the resources they provide,
and enables libraries to manage payments and other financial/subscription
details. Electronic Resource Management also helps libraries store relevant
data and selectively display information about electronic resources in the
Web OPAC for public services staff and patrons. This program will update attendees
on the progress to date for developing the module.
- Basic Circulation: Into the Millennium - Zippy Nickerson, Central Washington
University & Beth Longwell, Eastern Oregon University

character-based.
1:45 - 2:45 pm
- New Release Information - Betsy Graham, Innovative Interfaces (Franz
Hall Room 015)
- An overview of upcoming enhancements.
- How to use III Authority Module and OCLC Authority Service to do Authority
Work - Lihong Zhu, Washington State University (Franz Hall Room 026)
- Two years ago, WSU libraries and EWU Library embarked on an authority control
project aiming at improving the precision of retrieval in their shared online
catalog Griffin. The project involved three major phases. First, in 2000,
the existing database in Griffin was sent to OCLC/WLN, our authority control
vendor, for processing. OCLC/WLN processed the entire database and returned
it to us up to current authority standards. Second, new records are sent to
OCLC/WLN on a bimonthly basis for authority "washing." Third, cataloging librarians
at WSU and EWU go through OCLC/WLN bimonthly and quarterly authority reports
and use III authority module to solve any problems that can not be solved
by OCLC/WLN's automatic authority control process. The presentation will focus
on how we use III authority module to accomplish what can not be done by OCLC
automatic authority wash.
- Web Access Management - Beth Longwell, Eastern Oregon University & Carolyn
Piatz, University of Portland (Franz Hall Room 206)
- A brief overview of the Web Access Management module with an emphasis on
how to set up your system to use the proxy rewrite method.
- Millennium Media Manager - Claudia Conrad & Lynne Branche Brown, Innovative
Interfaces (Franz Hall Room 214)
- A look at the new Millennium media product that allows libraries to scan,
import, and integrate images into the bibliographic database.
- Managing Ejournal Titles and Holdings with Vendor Partners - Ted Fons,
Innovative Interfaces & Peter McCracken, Serials Solutions (Franz Hall Room
223)
- Serials Solutions and Innovative Interfaces are offering services and products
that allow libraries to manage electronic journals available through database
aggregators, subscription agents, and electronic publishers. Serials Solutions
offers services like full MARC records for ejournal titles and Innovative
offers bibliographic and serials holdings control tools and a new Ejournal
Holdings Update product that uses data provided by vendors like Serials Solutions.
This session will review these options as they have been implemented by libraries
and describes the partnership between Serials Solutions and Innovative in
bringing these options to libraries.
3:00 - 4:00pm

Fons, Innovative Interfaces (Franz Hall Room 206)
- An overview of Millennium Create Lists features and an introduction to
the upcoming Millennium Statistics program.
- MARCEdit and Locally-Created Load Profiles: Can We Load It? Yes We Can!
- Terry Reese, Oregon State University & Janet Crum, Oregon Health & Sciences
University (Franz Hall Room 214)
- Libraries often need to load records from many sources--OCLC, database
vendors, local databases of patron information, authority vendors, etc. In
this presentation, we will demonstrate ways to use locally-created load profiles
and Terry's MARCEdit program to load data from a variety of sources--without
having to purchase profiling services from Innovative.
- E-Journal Management Alternatives - Michael Spalti, Willamette University
(Franz Hall Room 223)
- Managing e-journals is a multi-dimensional problem that libraries have
faced for a number of years. Potential solutions exist today, each with differing
costs and benefits. This presentation offers a partial update on the status
of these alternatives, which range from in-house solutions to a variety of
competing commerical products. An in-house solution developed at Willamette
University will be presented as a case study in what is possible locally.
The question of whether and to what extent such open source projects are a
feasible approach to e-journal management will be asked but not necessarily
answered.
